Ep 9 “Something Ricked This Way Comes” is a good, but not great, episode that shows Rick and Morty can still deliver a fun time, even if it’s not a top-tier classic. 6.5/10 is enjoyable for me, but nothing compared to the high standards we are used to.
The main plot, a darkly comedic battle between a cynical Rick and a melodramatic Devil, is highly entertaining. Alfred Molina is a fantastic guest star and his chemistry with Rick is perfect. However, the A-plot feels a bit simplistic compared to the show’s more ambitious episodes.
The B-plot with Jerry on Pluto is a quintessential Jerry misadventure (perfectly pathetic and humorous) but it doesn’t break any new ground. While it’s certainly an enjoyable half-hour with great jokes and a fun concept, the episode feels a bit like a standard issue that doesn’t push the envelope.
It’s a good episode, but in a series filled with masterpieces, it falls a bit short.
