The Purge surprised me. Going in, I expected a gimmick, but the movie works as a tense home-invasion thriller with an intriguing dystopian idea behind it. 6.5/10
The concept – 12 hours of legal crime – is unsettling and instantly hooks you. While the film doesn’t fully explore the social and political angles, it uses the premise well enough to create suspense. Most of the action is contained inside one house, which keeps the tension focused.
Ethan Hawke gives a sturdy performance as the father torn between profit and protection, while Lena Headey quietly steals scenes with her layered presence. Rhys Wakefield, as the Polite Leader, makes for a chilling antagonist, delivering menace with a smile.
It’s not as deep as the premise deserves, but for a tight 85 minutes it’s gripping and watchable. A small-scale thriller that set the stage for a bigger franchise, and a decent one-time watch for fans of tense, high-concept horror.
