Ep 9 tackles the “annual crime spree” trope with the show’s signature satirical bite, but the result is a mixed bag. 7.5/10
The main plot strands Rick and Morty on a planet where yearly, sanctioned violence pushes Morty’s moral idealism to a terrifying, rage-filled breaking point. His violent catharsis is shocking, funny, and provides one of the episode’s strongest moments of character development.
However, the B-plot, featuring Summer and Jerry’s awkward attempts to bond while navigating Jerry’s unemployment, feels tonally disconnected and somewhat underdeveloped, slowing the momentum.
While the gruesome, action-heavy A-plot delivers plenty of dark humor and great visuals, the overall package feels like two good ideas that don’t fully complement each other, resulting in an installment that works brilliantly in pieces rather than as a whole.
