Season 3 premiere is a spectacular, breakneck thrill ride that delivers an explosive and utterly cynical answer to the Season 2 cliffhanger. It’s an instant classic, packed with more manic sci-fi chaos, dark humor, and massive plot payoffs than any episode before it.
The sheer ambition of the script is astounding, managing to weave multiple major storylines – Rick’s interrogation, Morty and Summer’s high-stakes rescue attempt, and the Smith family’s life under the Federation – into a tight, 22-minute runtime.
The art and animation are stellar, perfectly capturing the grand scale of the galactic events. While resolving major threats, the episode brilliantly swerves into an even darker, more complex status quo for the Smith family, deepening the already messy character dynamics between Rick, Beth, and Jerry.
It’s a hilarious, unapologetically cynical, and densely written season opener that immediately cements the show’s place as an unmatched comedic and narrative powerhouse. An 8/10 start to the season.
