I absolutely adore this episode because it’s where the series shifts from a mystery into a true adventure. The stakes aren’t just emotional now; they are scientific and physical.
My heart breaks for the kids as their quest to find Will, the one hope they cling to, ends in a devastating fight. Lucas’s logic vs. Mike’s faith hits so hard, and seeing Eleven use her power out of sheer loyalty to Mike, only to run in self-hatred, is a moment I’ll never forget.
While the kids are fractured, the adults step up. Hopper’s reckless break-in at the lab is pure ’80s action, and when he finally tells Joyce she was right, it’s the most satisfying moment of validation! We also see Nancy take her first fearless step, crawling into that terrifying tree.
This episode is where the show truly confirms the rules of this terrifying new world.
