This episode is a solid, character-focused 7/10… it slows the pace down after the explosive opener to deal with the season’s core emotional conflicts. While it doesn’t deliver high-octane action, it’s probably a vital episode for establishing the show’s painful new reality.
The contrast between the boys’ Halloween fun and Will’s inability to escape his trauma is heartbreaking, especially when he realizes his connection to the Shadow Monster is growing stronger. The episode expertly builds tension by revealing Eleven is safe but caged, and Mike’s quiet despair over her absence is palpable.
The introduction of Max and the genuinely unsettling Billy raises the high school drama, giving the kids new internal conflicts. Most importantly, El’s final, desperate break from the cabin and the resulting jealousy sets up huge drama for the future.
