This is exactly how you kick off a season. :) After a steady but somewhat quiet Season 5 run, the show returns with an absolute bang that reminds you why it’s been a heavyweight in adult animation.
The setup is comedy gold: Bobby accidentally joins a women’s self-defense class and discovers the “ultimate” fighting move. It is pure chaos to watch him dismantle the social hierarchy of Arlen one low blow at a time.
The writing is exceptionally sharp, particularly the hilarious irony of holding a Women’s class at the YMCA – a Young Men’s association. It’s that kind of clever, subtle contradiction that makes the show special. The YMCA setting provides a hilarious backdrop for his training, leading to a climax that is as cringe-inducing as it is funny.
Pamela Adlon delivers some of her best work here, perfectly capturing Bobby’s transition from a bullied kid to a delusional, power-tripping “martial artist.”
8.5/10: It is sharp, fast-paced, and features one of the most iconic lines in TV history. If you wanted the show to pick up the slack after a slower season, this is the perfect remedy.
