I have been in Hank’s shoes where a simple expression of affection becomes a complicated mess, and seeing the fallout here is genuinely moving.
This is a slower, more emotional burn that trades high-octane laughs for a deep dive into the Hill family’s fractured history. The conflict between Cotton and Buck over who gets to be the “real” father figure is fascinating, but the true gut-punch comes from Bobby’s reaction to Hank’s heartbreaking admission that there is no rule requiring a father and son to love each other.
While the character work is top-tier, the Jimmy Carter angle feels like a misstep that spoils a perfectly emotional episode. Having a celebrity mediator show up to resolve a lifelong family trauma feels out of place and takes the air out of the grounded tension. It is a masterstroke of character development that unfortunately gets distracted by its own guest star, but Bobby’s reaction remains one of the most stinging moments in the series.
