I’ll be honest – I wasn’t bowled over. But I was intrigued enough to keep going, and that counts for something.
This is a weird little show. A cursed New England island, a mayor who won’t listen to anyone, fog that means bad things, and humour that sneaks up on you rather than announces itself. The first episode takes its time setting all of this up, maybe a bit too much time, but it never feels lazy about it.
Matthew Rhys is the main reason to stick around. He plays stubbornness and desperation in a way that’s genuinely funny without ever winking at the camera. The seaside setting looks great too… grey, moody, a little forgotten. It suits the whole thing perfectly.
6.5/10: It’s not a grabber of an opener. But it’s different. And right now, different is enough.
