I went into Spider-Noir with real excitement after seeing the trailer. Nicolas Cage as a grizzled, retired Spider in a 1930s noir world sounded perfect.
And visually, it delivers right away. You can watch in black-and-white for that classic feel or in color – both look sharp. The mood, the shadows, the old-school New York streets all pull you in fast.
Nicolas Cage is excellent as the weary, retired Ben Reilly, a cynical 1930s PI pulled back into the mask. The innovative noir direction, rich period details, and the option to switch between black-and-white and color versions are highlights that kept me hooked.
Ep 1 felt a bit setup-heavy with less Spider action than expected after the trailer, but from Ep 2 onward the pacing clicks, investigations twist nicely, and the superpowered elements (Sandman, Tombstone) add great flavor. Standouts include the WWI origin flashbacks, intense hallucinations, the hilarious bar fight and mask moments, plus strong emotional beats with Janet and Cat.
The finale provides fitting closure with solid action drama and heart. Some mid-season breathers slow things slightly, but the atmosphere, Cage’s intensity, humour, and growing momentum make it worthwhile.
8.5/10: A fresh, fun take on the Spider mythos.
