In the Line of Fire (1993)

I rewatched In the Line of Fire to detox from the new Line of Fire show, though the two aren't really connected. This early-90s thriller still holds up well, but similar cat-and-mouse plots have been released since, and many improved on it.

Clint Eastwood retains his star charisma. He still carries every scene he's in. His Western gunslinger draw looks silly on a Secret Service agent, but I know why they had to show it that way. I like Rene Russo, and she does a good job here, though nothing extraordinary. John Malkovich was a revelation, and I recall this as his breakthrough role.

The pacing is smart and keeps the cat-and-mouse game tight. Some of the gender roles and dialogue might seem anachronistic today. Those are the details that have aged.

Thirty years ago I would have rated this an 8 or 9, but it's still a solid 7.5/10, and it works as a good palate cleanser.
