Anora (2024)

I liked Anora, but Best Picture AND Best Director at the Oscars? That's the definition of overrated. Sometimes I can't understand what these judges smoke.

Mikey Madison's Best Actress win makes complete sense… she literally carries this movie, and I could even accept the screenplay award at a stretch. But the film itself? It's sold as a rom-com, yet the romance evaporates halfway through and what remains is a chaotic comedy chase that overstays its welcome.

The editing, ironically an Oscar winner, needed a sharper hand. The movie goes on far too long and drags in several places, especially during the middle section where the same beats repeat endlessly. A tighter cut of 100 minutes would have hit much harder.

It's engaging and the tonal shifts are handled with confidence, no doubt. But a month from now, I doubt I'll remember much beyond Madison's performance.

7.5/10: A fun, well-acted ride that doesn't deserve its pedestal.
