You’d think putting John Cena and Idris Elba in a buddy-action comedy about world leaders saving the day would be a guaranteed popcorn smash. Instead, Heads of State lands somewhere between a diplomatic incident and a mildly amusing boys’ trip gone wrong.
Elba plays it straight as the no-nonsense British PM, while Cena mugs his way through as the gung-ho U. S. President with more enthusiasm than policy depth. Their chemistry works, in the “grumpy dad and excitable labrador” kind of way. Priyanka Chopra Jonas shows up with high heels and a clipboard, but is criminally underused. The rest of the cast? Present, mostly.
Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry, Nobody), the film occasionally remembers it’s supposed to be fun, with a few inventive action sequences and some stylish globe-trotting shots. But it’s all a bit too clean, too tame… like Mission: Impossible filtered through airport security.
There’s satire here too, faintly… MAGA digs, Brexit nods, and global politics turned playground, but it doesn’t dig deep enough to sting.
Verdict:
A serviceable action-comedy that never quite takes off. Charming in patches, but more foreign junket than international crisis.
6/10 – best enjoyed with jet lag and low expectations.
