From the moment the familiar strains of “Forbidden Friendship” echoed in the cinema, you knew you were home. Having seen this movie with the family, it’s clear this live-action adaptation is far more than a mere re-tread; it’s a soaring success, easily earning an 8/10.
Director Dean DeBlois, returning to the helm, has masterfully re-envisioned Berk with a keen eye for both epic scale and intimate detail. Unlike the original book series by Cressida Cowell, which featured a more diminutive, less fearsome Toothless and dragons already integrated into Viking life, this film, much like the animated movies, embraces the grand conflict and the breathtaking discovery of a world where man and beast can coexist.
The VFX are nothing short of stunning; Toothless and the other dragons feel utterly real, their movements fluid and expressive, integrating seamlessly into the live-action world. Every flight sequence is a true spectacle, making you grip your seat.
The acting is spot-on, with Mason Thames embodying Hiccup’s awkward charm and burgeoning courage, and Nico Parker capturing Astrid’s fierce spirit. Gerard Butler’s return as Stoick adds a powerful, familiar presence, and Nick Frost as Gobber delivers genuinely hilarious comedic relief.
The emotion runs deep, hitting all the beloved beats of friendship, acceptance, and the unbreakable bond between a boy and his dragon, tugging at the heartstrings just as powerfully as the animated original.
This adaptation isn’t merely a retread; it’s a vibrant, exhilarating flight that truly captures the magic for a new generation.
