Descendants

Watching Kenny Ortega’s Descendants with my daughter on Disney+ proved surprisingly engaging – this Disney Channel Original has genuine charm beneath its teen musical formula.

The premise is clever: Prince Ben invites four villain children from their island prison to attend Auradon Prep, whilst they secretly plot to steal the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand.

Dove Cameron shines as Mal, Maleficent’s conflicted daughter, bringing real depth to her role. The supporting cast creates believable friendships as villain offspring struggling between their parents’ evil legacy and their own moral choices.

The musical numbers are catchy without being overly saccharine, and Ortega’s choreography keeps things visually engaging. What works best is the thoughtful exploration of nature versus nurture: can villain children choose to be good?

Sure, it’s formulaic and occasionally cheesy, but there’s genuine heart in watching these kids discover they don’t have to follow their parents’ paths.

Rating: 7.5/10 (Smart premise and winning performances elevate Disney Channel formula into genuinely entertaining family viewing)
