The Invention of Lying

Ricky Gervais takes a simple premise – a world where lying doesn’t exist – and turns it into a comedy of awkward truths and outrageous fibs. As Mark Bellison, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter, he discovers the power of the first lie and quickly rewrites the rules of dating, fame, and even religion.

The opening half is razor sharp: people spout brutal honesty without filter, and Gervais milks every cringe for laughs. Jennifer Garner brings genuine warmth to his romantic foil, while Rob Lowe smarms it up as the genetically blessed rival. Sprinkle in cameos from Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and you’ve got a killer support cast.

But once the satire balloons into religion and morality, the film starts wobbling under its own ambition. It’s clever, sometimes profound, but not always consistent.

Verdict: funny, thought-provoking, and charmingly uneven – a 7/10 experiment that works more often than it fails.
