After bingeing Wednesday with my daughter- where Jenna Ortega’s deadpan delivery could freeze a corpse- I thought, Why not dive deeper into the delightfully macabre? Enter The Addams Family, a film that proves even animated undead can outshine most live-action families.
While Wednesday served us gothic teen angst with a side of supernatural sleuthing, the new Addams Family movie is like a haunted house ride: fast, colorful, and occasionally screaming with joy.
The animation is lush, the humor is dark (but never too dark for the kiddos), and the family’s love for all things morbid is as heartwarming as it is hilarious.
Gomez and Morticia’s romance still sizzles like a well-stoked furnace, and Uncle Fester’s antics remain the chaotic cherry on top.
If Wednesday was a moody, mystery-laden coming-of-age tale, this movie is a love letter to the family’s classic, campy roots. The plot? Thin as a ghost’s sheet, but who cares when the one-liners hit harder than Lurch’s door slams? The voice cast is spot-on, and the film’s self-aware humor – poking fun at everything from social media to suburban conformity – keeps the laughs coming. Just don’t expect deep character arcs… this is a family that’s already perfectly, gloriously broken.
My daughter’s verdict: “Can we watch it again?” My verdict: It’s no Wednesday, but it’s a spooktacular good time. Let’s watch the sequel next !
In short, if Wednesday was the brooding cousin at the family reunion, The Addams Family is the eccentric uncle doing magic tricks with live eels. Both are essential viewing, but one leaves you craving more mystery, the other more mayhem. Either way, you’ll leave grinning like Thing after a successful high-five.
7.5/10 – would dance the Mamushka again.
