Bale, Damon, and Racing Tech Magic
IMDb rating: 8/10
I dove into Ford v Ferrari (now renamed Le Mans 66) and was floored by its pulse-pounding energy. It is a gripping tale, with stellar performances, and top-notch technical execution.
This biographical drama chronicles Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale) as they craft the Ford GT40 to dethrone Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans. James Mangold’s direction masterfully blends exhilarating racing sequences with emotional depth, creating an immersive narrative that keeps viewers on the edge, especially in the heart-racing finale… though some corporate subplots occasionally slow the momentum.
The script by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Jason Keller is a firecracker of passion and tension, mixing action, drama, and historical insight; however, it treads conventional paths with underdeveloped characters and minor historical tweaks.
Bale’s transformative, fiery Miles and Damon’s suave Shelby spark electric chemistry, while Tracy Letts’ explosive Henry Ford II steals scenes. Caitriona Balfe and Noah Jupe bring warmth as Miles’ family, though roles like Josh Lucas’ antagonist feel stereotypical.
Technically, Phedon Papamichael’s cinematography captures stunning, immersive visuals that thrust you into the races, complemented by Oscar-winning editing (Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland) that makes the 152-minute runtime fly, and pulse-pounding sound design (Donald Sylvester) with a booming mix enhancing every rev.
Despite minor pacing hiccups and formulaic elements, Ford v Ferrari is a thrilling, heartfelt triumph celebrating grit and innovation… a must for car enthusiasts and drama lovers.
