Misdirection Masquerading as Mediocrity
IMDb rating: 7/10
Just when one’s patience reaches its absolute nadir, Slow Horses delivers a closing twist so expertly calibrated that it retrospectively transforms fifty minutes of plodding character work into what might generously be termed masterful misdirection. 6.5/10
Ep 3 maintains its stubbornly consistent trajectory of qualified mediocrity until those final moments remind us why we began this journey in the first place.
Gary Oldman continues his masterclass in professional dissolution, wielding sarcasm like a finely honed blade whilst his ensemble of departmental casualties shuffle through their respective melodramas with predictable competence.
The production remains undeniably polished, though one yearns for substance to match the considerable style on display.
Yet just as resignation threatens to overwhelm patience entirely, the final moments deliver a genuinely arresting revelation that transforms the preceding tedium into what might charitably be termed strategic misdirection. Suddenly, the laborious character archaeology begins to resemble purposeful excavation rather than mere narrative procrastination.
This eleventh-hour twist doesn’t retroactively justify the glacial build-up, but it does suggest that perhaps, just perhaps, there’s been method to this particular madness all along. The promise of actual momentum glimmers tantalizingly on the horizon.
Still frustratingly slow, but that ending changes everything.
