Sherlock Holmes (2009)

A Bromance of Fists and Flaws

I was initially disappointed in 2009 with Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, going in with sky high expectations… looking for a gritty, cerebral take on Doyle’s detective but delivering a chaotic, action-heavy buddy comedy. Rewatching it years later, however, reveals a film that’s far from a disaster… just not the masterpiece some hoped for.

Robert Downey Jr. And Jude Law are the film’s saving grace. Downey’s manic, eccentric Holmes and Law’s exasperated Watson crackle with chemistry, making their bromantic banter the heart of the movie.

Ritchie’s signature slow-motion action sequences, while anachronistic, are undeniably fun, and Hans Zimmer’s score adds a moody, pulsating energy. Yet, the plot is overcomplicated, the tone uneven, and Mark Strong’s villain underwhelming.

Sherlock Holmes isn’t the deep, faithful adaptation Ritchie and Downey fans might have wanted, but it’s a rollicking, flawed romp.

It’s a film that improves with lowered expectations and a second viewing – a guilty pleasure for those who enjoy stylized mayhem and charismatic leads.

7/10: Not a masterpiece, but a decently entertaining night out.
