The Tomorrowverse tackles Batman’s most beloved comic but stumbles with sluggish pacing and weak dialogue that fails to honor Jeph Loeb’s masterpiece, which is one of my favourite Batman arcs.
What Works:
Jensen Ackles channels Supernatural’s intensity into a compelling Batman, while Josh Duhamel brings Las Vegas charisma to Harvey Dent’s tragic arc. Naya Rivera’s final performance as Catwoman balances sultry confidence with emotional depth. The animation faithfully captures Tim Sale’s distinctive gothic art style with moody cinematography.
What Struggles:
The script betrays the source material’s brilliance. Where Loeb’s comic crackled with noir authenticity, the film drags through stilted conversations. The masterful pacing of the original becomes frustratingly sluggish, transforming a tight holiday mystery into a meandering slog.
Key character moments feel underwritten, stripping away the comic’s emotional impact. Even accounting for the two-part split, this adaptation loses what made the story legendary.
Bottom Line: Exceptional voice work and beautiful animation can’t overcome a script that fails its legendary source.
Great casting, weak execution. I really hope they redeem it in part two.
