I went into Materialists (2025) expecting a forgettable rom-com, but wow, it surprised me, earning a 6.5/10!
Dakota Johnson’s Lucy, a New York matchmaker, juggles a hotshot client, Harry (Pedro Pascal), and her ex, John (Chris Evans), in a story that’s funny, heartfelt, and a bit predictable. It’s all about love versus money, and I felt that tug in my chest. Johnson’s warm but could’ve popped more; Pascal had me swooning with his charm, and Evans made me ache for his quiet guy.
Celine Song’s direction and Shabier Kirchner’s dreamy 35mm NYC visuals are a treat, though the story drags in spots and wraps up too neatly. I laughed, I teared up a bit, and I didn’t expect to care as much as I did. It’s perfect for a cozy night with your phone nearby for the slower bits.
Materialists isn’t perfect, but it’s got heart and beat my low expectations!
