Dasvi is an unexpectedly watchable 7/10 gem that mixes biting political satire with hearty laughs.
Abhishek Bachchan surprises as Ganga Ram, a jailed politician trading scams for schoolbooks, nailing the shift from smug neta to earnest student with rustic charm. Yami Gautam’s steely superintendent Jyoti keeps the prison scenes crisp, though her role lacks emotional meat. Nimrat Kaur’s Bimla, scheming to hog the CM chair, is a delicious blend of sly and hilarious, stealing every scene.
Tushar Jalota’s debut direction keeps the 125-minute JioCinema ride breezy, with Sachin-Jigar’s “Macha Macha Re” pumping energy into a tale of redemption and literacy. The script, while sharp, leans on predictable underdog tropes, and some gags – like the prison sidekicks – feel forced.
Still, Dasvi lands its punches at India’s corrupt elite while cheering for education, making it a fun, flawed crowd-pleaser. Perfect for a lazy weekend, it’s proof Bachchan’s got more in his bag than Bollywood expected.
Don’t expect a masterpiece, but you’ll grin through its quirks.
