Swords, Sandals, and Savage Revenge: Gladiator Revisited
IMDb rating: 9/10
I was about to watch the recent sequel, but thought I will give the original a rewatch first. And I am so glad I did.
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is a blood-soaked symphony of vengeance that slashes through Hollywood’s dreck like a gladius through butter. Russell Crowe snarls and sweats as Maximus, the betrayed general turned arena beast, delivering a gut-punch performance that’s equal parts brute force and broken heart… pure Oscar gold.
Joaquin Phoenix slithers as the weaselly Commodus, a villain so deliciously detestable you’ll cheer for his downfall while cringing at his mommy issues. The supporting cast? Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla simmers with icy intrigue, Oliver Reed’s grizzled Proximo steals scenes even from beyond the grave (thanks, CGI wizardry), and Hans Zimmer’s score thunders like the gods themselves.
Visually, it’s a Roman orgy of epic battles and sun-drenched coliseums, but don’t expect historical homework… this is myth-making at its finest, flaws be damned. Pacing drags in spots, and some CGI tigers look like they escaped a PS2 game, yet the emotional core roars louder than the crowd. A genre-reviving beast that reminds us why we crave spectacle.
8.5/10-Ave, cinema, morituri te salutant!
