Molly’s Game

Picture a poker table where the stakes are your soul… Molly’s Game shuffles that deck with nervy flair.

Jessica Chastain is a revelation as Molly Bloom, the skier-turned-poker-czar, her razor wit and raw wounds owning every frame – Golden Globe nod well-earned. Idris Elba, as lawyer Charlie, brings heart and heft, though his role’s a bit light on chips. Kevin Costner’s turn as Molly’s dad hits like a hidden ace, while Michael Cera’s creepy Player X deals a chilling wild card.

Aaron Sorkin’s first stab at directing crackles with his machine-gun dialogue, turning poker dens into neon-charged battlegrounds. The legal bits occasionally limp, and side players get shortchanged, but Chastain’s fire keeps it alive. Daniel Pemberton’s score pulses, though Sorkin’s wordy script can feel like a lecture hall. Not a perfect hand – pacing wobbles, and some lines overplay their bet – but it’s a gripping glimpse into a world of bluffs and ballsy moves.

7.5/10: Molly’s Game is a smart, stylish gamble that mostly pays off.
