21 is the kind of film that makes you think, “Maybe I could count cards,” right before you remember you can’t even balance a checkbook.
Jim Sturgess plays Ben, a math prodigy who trades textbooks for blackjack tables under the tutelage of Kevin Spacey’s Micky Rosa – a man who mentors like a villain and dresses like a midlife crisis.
The first hour is a rush: montages of winning, Vegas glitter, and the thrill of outsmarting the system. But like a bad streak at the craps table, the middle act drags. The romance subplot feels as forced as a casino drink, and the “twists” are telegraphed like a dealer’s tell. Still, when the cards are hot, 21 is a blast. Spacey’s smarmy charm and the team’s chemistry keep you in the game, even when the plot doubles down on clichés.
The real star? The tension. Will they get caught? Will Ben’s moral compass (or lack thereof) cost them everything? The climax is satisfying, if a little too neat… like a magician revealing the trick but still making you applaud.
Final Verdict: A fun, flawed heist flick that’s worth a bet, but don’t go all-in.
Rating: 7.5/10.
