The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything is a moving biopic that hit me right in the feels, earning a 7/10.

Eddie Redmayne is unreal as Stephen Hawking, nailing his brilliance and ALS struggle… his physical transformation blew me away, especially in the mid-film diagnosis scene, pure heart-wrenching magic. Felicity Jones as Jane, his wife, brings grit and love, though she gets a bit lost in Eddie’s glow. Their romance and Stephen’s cosmic discoveries are beautifully woven, with Benoît Delhomme’s soft visuals and Jóhann Jóhannsson’s gorgeous score tugging my heartstrings.

James Marsh directs with care, but the pacing… man, it drags in the middle with too much focus on domestic woes. Trim 10 minutes, and it could’ve been an 8/10. Anthony McCarten’s script, based on Jane’s memoir, leans hard into sentiment, sometimes feeling like a TV movie.

I was hooked, but my phone got some love during the slow bits. It’s quite good, not perfect, but Redmayne’s performance and the love story make it worth your time.

Watch it for the heart and Hawking’s mind!
