The fifth Tomorrowverse entry finally gives John Stewart his overdue spotlight but delivers a frustratingly by-the-numbers space adventure. As a comic fan, this feels like a missed opportunity to do justice to one of DC’s most underutilized characters.
What Works:
Aldis Hodge brings the same commanding presence from Leverage and City on a Hill to John Stewart’s ex-Marine background, perfectly capturing his architectural precision and military discipline. Jimmi Simpson’s Green Arrow steals scenes with perfect comedic timing, while the animation maintains high quality.
Getting John Stewart – criminally overlooked in most adaptations – into the spotlight feels long overdue.
What Struggles:
This original story loosely borrows from “Emerald Twilight” and “Zero Hour” but strips away what made those storylines compelling. The plot hits every predictable “reluctant hero” beat without innovation.
As someone who’s read John’s best comic runs, seeing him reduced to Kyle Rayner’s origin story with cosmetic changes is disappointing. The script feels workmanlike when it should soar – John Stewart deserves writing that matches his complexity as both architect and warrior.
Brian Bloom’s Adam Strange provides decent menace, but the overall structure feels routine for anyone familiar with Green Lantern lore.
Bottom Line:
Hodge’s excellent performance can’t overcome formulaic storytelling that wastes decades of rich source material. John Stewart fans will appreciate seeing him on screen, but we deserved better than this paint-by-numbers approach.
Great character, generic treatment. 6.5/10.
