The Usual Suspects

Noir at Its Finest: Keyser Söze’s Enduring Trick That Never Loses Its Edge

IMDb rating: 9/10

The Usual Suspects remains a masterclass in suspense, even on rewatch. Knowing the jaw-dropping iconic twist doesn’t dull its edge… Bryan Singer’s neo-noir gem still grips with its labyrinthine plot and stellar ensemble.

Kevin Spacey’s Verbal Kint is a chameleon, shifting from meek to menacing, his Oscar-worthy performance anchoring the film’s deception. Gabriel Byrne’s brooding Keaton and Benicio del Toro’s eccentric Fenster shine, though Stephen Baldwin’s McManus feels one-note. Christopher McQuarrie’s Oscar-winning script weaves a tale of five criminals ensnared by the elusive Keyser Söze, with every flashback tightening the noose of intrigue.

John Ottman’s haunting score and sharp editing amplify the tension, while Newton Thomas Sigel’s moody visuals scream noir. Shot on a tight $6 million, this 1995 classic punches above its weight, its non-linear storytelling and quotable lines etching it into cinematic history. Despite off-screen controversies, the film’s craft is undeniable, keeping me glued to the screen.

A 9/10 for its relentless pull and replay value… required viewing for thriller fans.
