DC Showcase: Constantine – The House of Mystery

As someone following the Tomorrowverse journey, I wanted to see this before I started the Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy … and this 27-minute short delivers exactly what was needed: a haunting explanation for how we got from Apokolips War’s devastation to Superman: Man of Tomorrow’s fresh start. A brilliant bridge between DC universes disguised as psychological horror.

Matt Ryan returns as Constantine with his usual sardonic charm, trapped in a nightmarish time loop where friends become demons.

The horror elements work surprisingly well. Watching Zatanna, Chas, and others repeatedly turn demonic and kill Constantine creates genuine unease. The animation captures the creepy atmosphere perfectly, while the repetitive structure builds psychological tension rather than feeling redundant.

What elevates this above typical horror shorts is the clever continuity work. This isn’t just Constantine suffering… it’s the universe’s attempt to heal itself after Flash’s reality-rewriting Flashpoint. The ending revelation about Constantine’s imprisonment and eventual fate connects beautifully to Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Occasionally I found it rushed, but the violence serves the story’s themes about consequence and sacrifice. It’s gripping, gory and delightfully evil in the best Constantine tradition.

Bottom Line: Essential viewing for DC animated universe fans. A perfect epilogue to one era and prologue to another.
