Monica, O My Darling is the kind of stylish surprise Bollywood doesn’t often deliver… a noir-tinged, darkly comic thriller that laughs at its own genre while pulling you along for the ride. Vasan Bala’s direction is sharp, self-aware, and full of nods to classic Hindi movies, from the pulpy score to melodramatic flourishes that feel like affectionate parody.
Rajkummar Rao is terrific as Jayant, a man who thinks he’s in control but keeps spiraling deeper into chaos. Huma Qureshi revels in the femme fatale role, giving Monica layers of menace and seduction. And Radhika Apte nearly steals the show as a witty, no-nonsense cop who drops punchlines as easily as clues. The retro-inspired soundtrack by Achint Thakkar is an absolute gem, one of the film’s strongest assets.
If there’s a weak point, it’s the final act: the wrap-up feels a bit too quick and less clever than the build-up deserved. But overall, I had a great time. This is a slick, funny, and refreshingly offbeat Hindi thriller.
7.5/10 – stylish, surprising, and darkly hilarious.
