Joker

A New Breed of Villainy

IMDb rating: 8/10

Most of us (like me) thought this would be another DC superhero movie but Joker proved it was something else entirely.

Shaking off the typical superhero movie tropes, the film instead delivers a grim and unsettling character study that feels like a psychological thriller from a bygone era. It’s this bold, different approach that makes it so compelling and memorable.

The film’s success rests almost entirely on a truly transformative performance from Joaquin Phoenix. It’s a masterclass in acting, portraying Arthur Fleck’s tragic descent into madness with a haunting intensity that is impossible to look away from. Just as crucial is Todd Phillips’ direction, which crafts a bleak, grimy vision of Gotham that perfectly mirrors the internal chaos of its protagonist. Every shot feels meticulously composed, building an atmosphere that is both captivating and deeply uncomfortable.

Ultimately, “Joker” is a powerful and challenging film. While its themes are heavy, its exceptional acting and confident direction make for a unique cinematic experience. It’s a compelling piece of work, and for those qualities, it rightfully earns its 8/10.
