A Star-Studded Disappointment

What did I just watch? I can’t remember the last Bachchan movie which was so boring that I literally dozed off!

Gulabo Sitabo, directed by Shoojit Sircar and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, promised a quirky and heartfelt tale, but sadly delivers a meandering and ultimately pointless story.

The film’s core concept (a cantankerous old landlord’s battle with his clever tenant over a crumbling mansion) had great potential for sharp wit and character-driven comedy. However, the narrative loses its way, getting bogged down in repetitive, tiresome exchanges that fail to advance the plot or provide any meaningful insight into its characters.

Amitabh Bachchan’s performance as the miserly, perpetually hunched-over Mirza is a testament to his dedication, but even his legendary presence can’t save a poorly written character. He’s more of a caricature than a compelling lead. Ayushmann Khurrana, usually a reliable performer, feels adrift in a role that gives him little to work with. The much-anticipated clash between these two actors falls flat, lacking the chemistry and tension needed to make their rivalry engaging.

The film’s most glaring flaw is its lack of a cohesive plot. The conflicts feel fabricated, and the stakes never rise above a petty squabble. What starts as a promising satire on greed and human nature devolves into a series of predictable events. While the Lucknow setting is charming and beautifully shot, it can’t compensate for a screenplay that lacks purpose and an emotional core.

Gulabo Sitabo is a disappointing effort from a team with a strong track record, proving that a stellar cast and director can’t salvage a story that has nothing to say.
