Rewatching Darr after three decades, I was struck by how bold it still feels. Yash Chopra, the master of romance, veering into the territory of obsession and fear, was a gamble – and it paid off. This isn’t just a love story; it’s a disturbing psychological thriller dressed in melodrama.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Rahul remains one of his most unforgettable characters. The way he oscillates between boyish charm and chilling menace is extraordinary. That “K-k-k-Kiran” stammer is burned into Hindi film history, but beyond the gimmick, it’s the sheer madness in his eyes that makes the performance timeless.
Juhi Chawla brings warmth and vulnerability to Kiran, making her plight feel real. Sunny Deol is convincing as the steadfast fiancé, though the film really belongs to SRK.
The music by Shiv-Hari is another highlight… Jaadu Teri Nazar still sends chills, and Tu Mere Saamne remains beautifully romantic.
Yes, some parts are a bit over-the-top, but that’s part of its vintage charm. For me, Darr still stands tall as an 8/10: a daring classic where love, fear, and obsession collide.
