Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa

Back in 1994, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na completely charmed me… I remember rating it 8.5/10 at the time. Rewatching it with my own teenage child proves this film’s extraordinary staying power. It remains warm, funny, heartbreaking, and morally sophisticated – qualities that simply don’t age.

Shah Rukh Khan delivers career-best work as Sunil, a lovably flawed protagonist whose journey from selfish romantic to redeemed individual feels utterly genuine. His vulnerability and comic timing are undeniable, and he gives Sunil an everyman relatability that’s rare in mainstream Hindi cinema of that era.

Kundan Shah’s direction demonstrates remarkable restraint and intelligence, crafting something commercially accessible yet artistically ambitious. The humour sparkles throughout, thanks to clever writing executed with brilliant comic timing.

The rest of the cast is quietly effective: Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is sweet and believable, Deepak Tijori makes a dignified rival, and the supporting family/friends ensemble gives the film its cozy feel.

Jatin-Lalit’s music remains lovely; the songs are full of innocence and melody that instantly take me back to the ’90s.

For me, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na still works, just not with the same magic as before. A solid 7/10: warm, nostalgic, and worth revisiting.
