Code 3 offers a powerful, 24-hour immersion into the exhausting world of the Emergency Medical Service. Rainn Wilson delivers a strong, committed performance as Randy, a paramedic veteran counting down his final shift, visibly frayed by a system that takes everything and compensates poorly.
Co-written by a former medic, the film’s authenticity is its greatest strength, keenly exposing the burnout and systemic failures inherent to the job. The premise is compelling, but its true challenge is its tonal unpredictability. The script frequently pivots sharply between laugh-out-loud dark comedy and emotionally devastating drama.
While the film is deeply honest and rewarding for its subject matter, its inability to smoothly merge its disparate tones keeps it from reaching a higher rank. This constant back-and-forth (the oscillation between gallows humor and profound pathos) often feels jarring and inconsistent, preventing the narrative flow from settling into a steady groove.
It is a very interesting watch that highlights critical issues, but I wish it had chosen a clearer lane.
