The Equalizer 2

The Equalizer 2 is a rare sequel that gives Robert McCall more heart as well as more targets.

Denzel Washington slips back into the role with effortless authority… calm, precise, and terrifying when needed. What I liked most here is the added emotional weight: the loss of a close friend hits hard, and you feel McCall’s grief under the surface. The storm-soaked finale is a standout, tense and beautifully staged, proving Fuqua still knows how to craft a memorable set-piece.

Where the film stumbles is in the middle stretch. The subplot with the young painter has its moments but feels like padding, and the “twist” about who’s really behind the betrayal is easy to spot. At over two hours, the pacing drags, and a few quiet sequences feel like repetition rather than character depth.

Even so, Washington elevates everything. He makes the familiar plot beats compelling, and the action (though less inventive than the first) still hits hard. Not as tight or surprising as the original, but a satisfying, brooding sequel. 7.5/10.
