I went into The Toxic Avenger not knowing the original and was surprised by how entertaining this remake turned out to be. It’s an odd mix: part superhero spoof, part slasher, part gross-out comedy. If you enjoy pitch-black humour wrapped in buckets of gore, this will probably hit the right spot.
Peter Dinklage makes an unusual but oddly effective lead, bringing both tragic weight and absurd comedy to Winston’s transformation. Kevin Bacon has fun hamming it up as the villain, while Elijah Wood is nearly unrecognisable as the grotesque Fritz.
The movie works best when it leans into its spoofy, over-the-top energy. The violence is cartoonishly gory, and the satire is blunt but amusing. Where it falters is in pacing… some stretches drag, and not every gag lands. The film is also not for the squeamish; the gore is intentionally extreme.
Overall, I’d call it a watchable 6.5/10. It’s messy but fun, and if you’re in the mood for something wild, weird, and darkly funny, it delivers.
