Fuqua’s Thriller Still Delivers: Maximum Mayhem, Minimum Mess with this Pure Action Formula
IMDb rating: 8/10

I watched it for the 3rd time and I must say – Olympus Has Fallen remains a fantastic, solid 8/10 and the ultimate proof that an action movie just needs to deliver on its promise.
Director Antoine Fuqua avoids complexity, instead crafting a lean, R-rated thriller that perfectly executes the “Die Hard in the White House” formula.
Gerard Butler is ideally cast as Mike Banning, a disgraced Secret Service agent who becomes a relentless, one-man army inside the besieged White House. The film’s major strength is its efficiency; the opening aerial and ground assault is a visceral, chaotic 13-minute sequence that sets a brutal tone and never lets up.
The high-calibre supporting cast, including Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, grounds the crisis room scenes, providing gravitas that contrasts sharply with Banning’s brutal, hand-to-hand combat.
It’s an unapologetic, adrenaline-fueled rush that prioritizes sharp action and clear stakes over unnecessary subplots. Highly recommended for any fan of the classic ’90s action era… it holds up beautifully on a rewatch too.
