Speed

After watching The Lost Bus yesterday, I thought of revisiting 1994’s Speed (a completely different movie, with only a bus being the common thread)…

Speed remains one of the defining action thrillers of the ’90s. The concept is simple but ingenious: a bus that can’t go below 50 mph. On rewatch, the adrenaline is still there… the highway sequences, the stunts, and the ticking-clock tension are brilliantly staged.

Reeves plays it straight, Bullock’s charm and wit make Annie instantly likable, and Hopper chews the scenery as the villain. Time has dulled some of the edge, and after decades of imitators the setup may not feel as fresh, but it’s still gripping and highly entertaining.

What struck me this time was how well it balances suspense with moments of humor and humanity. My kids, watching it for the first time, were completely engaged, proving that the film still works across generations.

For me, it’s now an 8/10 (instead of the 9/10 it once was), but that’s still high praise for a 30-year-old action movie.
