Shakuntala Devi

Rewatching Shakuntala Devi (this time with my daughter) was a joy… this 7.5/10 gem still inspires!

Vidya Balan is electric as Shakuntala, the math wizard, her larger-than-life charm and vulnerability sparking hope in my teen. Sanya Malhotra’s Anu grounds the story, her quiet pain hitting home, though the script shortchanges her depth. Jisshu Sengupta’s Paritosh is steady but bland, and Anjana Jayaswal’s motherly role feels like a warm hug but fades fast.

Anu Menon’s direction weaves Bangalore’s vibrancy with emotional family rifts, and Sachin-Jigar’s “Jhilmil Piya” lifts the mood.

The 127-minute film shines with feminist spirit… Shakuntala’s fight against a sexist world is a lesson for my daughter, but it drags with predictable beats and glosses over her darker struggles. Danny Cohen’s visuals pop, but some theatrical moments feel forced.

It’s not perfect, yet its heart and message of chasing dreams make it a cozy, uplifting watch we both loved.

Perfect for inspiring young minds!
