My Cousin Vinny

After multiple rewatches, My Cousin Vinny remains for me a comedy masterpiece that never loses its charm. 8.5/10

This fish-out-of-water courtroom gem succeeds because it respects both its characters and audience… nobody’s the butt of the joke, just caught in hilarious circumstances.

Joe Pesci absolutely owns the role of Vinny Gambini, creating a character who’s simultaneously cocky and vulnerable, bluffing his way through his first trial while genuinely terrified of failure. But it’s Marisa Tomei who steals every scene, delivering an Oscar-winning performance that’s fierce, funny, and surprisingly touching. Her automotive expertise testimony is comedy gold wrapped in genuine intelligence.

The supporting cast elevates everything: Fred Gwynne’s deadpan judge work in his final role, Ralph Macchio’s perfect straight-man energy, and Lane Smith’s formidable prosecutor all contribute to a perfectly balanced ensemble. Dale Launer’s razor-sharp script and Jonathan Lynn’s confident direction maintain momentum across 118 minutes that fly by.

It’s endlessly rewatchable because it’s fundamentally kind-hearted while being genuinely hilarious. A rare comedy that legal professionals actually respect for its accuracy.
