A fascinating concept executed with a dispiriting lack of imagination.
The promise of an “Elseworlds” story, setting a Dark Knight-inspired hero against the historical backdrop of the 16th-century Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire, is the film’s greatest strength. The vibrant setting and the re-imagining of classic villains (like Hernán Cortés as a chilling Two-Face and a shaman-turned-Joker) initially set a grand stage.
However, the final product is ultimately boring, predictable, and pointless because it relies too heavily on the familiar beats of a generic origin story. The narrative fails to leverage its unique setting to create a truly new conflict. Instead, it shoehorns the well-known Batman revenge-quest formula into the fall of Tenochtitlán, making the outcome feel predetermined and the Batman elements feel less like a re-invention and more like a superficial overlay.
Despite strong art and cultural references, the predictable plot and lack of emotional stakes waste what should have been a truly bold and memorable cinematic experience.
