Home Alone 2 steps into the shadow of its predecessor, and impressively manages to survive.
While its structural repetition is often pointed out, this sequel is a near-perfect execution of the “if it ain’t broke” philosophy. Kevin, once again separated, finds a much grander, more exhilarating playground in New York City.
The plot smartly raises the stakes, moving the cat-and-mouse game from a suburban home to the towering luxury of the Plaza Hotel and an abandoned brownstone. The traps are more elaborate, the emotional beats are familiar, and the return of the Wet Bandits feels necessary to deliver the expected chaos.
For new viewers, it’s a brilliant, high-stakes standalone adventure. For fans of the first, it’s a generous, if somewhat familiar, encore… successfully delivering on all the fan-favorite moments we came for.
It’s an easy, feel-good 8.5/10 that knew exactly what its audience wanted.
