Maja Ma

Maja Ma is a showcase for Madhuri Dixit’s magnetic presence, but buckling under the weight of its own ambitions. The setup (a small-town rumor threatening a family’s honor) feels fresh, and Dixit’s portrayal of Pallavi, a woman balancing societal expectations with quiet defiance, is a masterclass in subtlety.

The first hour glides with sharp dialogue and a lived-in family dynamic. But the final act trips into melodrama, rushing through emotional beats like a checklist. The ending, meant to tie loose ends, feels contrived… a letdown after such a compelling build. Still, Dixit’s performance is so luminous (a tearful glance, a defiant smile) that you’ll forgive the script’s shortcuts.

7/10: a film that leans too hard on its star but remains watchable, if uneven.
