Taxi to the Dark Side

Too Late to Shock, Too Slow to Engage

IMDb rating: 3/10

I know Taxi to the Dark Side won an Oscar and was hailed as groundbreaking in 2007, but watching it today – nearly two decades later – it just didn’t land for me.

The documentary examines U. S. military torture practices during the War on Terror, centered on the tragic case of an Afghan taxi driver beaten to death by American soldiers. The subject is undeniably important, but the storytelling now feels dated and overly familiar.

Maybe it’s because so many documentaries, books, and news investigations since then have covered the same ground, often with sharper editing and fresher angles. Alex Gibney’s tone is serious and thorough, but also a bit dry… long stretches of narration and talking heads that drain emotional energy instead of building it.

I can respect its historical value and courage for its time, but watching it now felt more like a history lesson than a revelation.

Important, yes… but honestly, quite boring and overlong.
