I saw there was a new sequel and I hadn’t seen any of the V/H/S movies so decided to start from scratch. Not sure it was a good decision.
This is a chaotic found-footage anthology that tries to shock but mostly stumbles. Five disconnected horror shorts, loosely tied by a flimsy framing story about thieves finding creepy VHS tapes, feel like a scattershot experiment gone wrong. While “Amateur Night” offers a flicker of unsettling tension, most segments are plagued by shaky camerawork, weak plots, and cheap jump scares that fail to deliver genuine fear.
The lack of narrative cohesion makes the film feel random and pointless, leaving you more confused than scared. Its low-budget grit might appeal to diehard horror fans, but the uneven execution and lackluster payoffs drag it down.
It’s probably a bold idea back in 2012 that overreaches, resulting in a frustrating slog rather than a chilling thrill ride. Only anthology completists might find scraps to salvage here.
Not sure I will be back for the second, though I am told it is better?
