Womb, With a View: The Wit and Warmth of Juno
IMDb rating: 7/10
I absolutely loved the fresh energy Juno brought to the screen, when I first watched it in 2007. It still retains it, mostly.
Elliot Page is magnificent as the cynical, quick-witted high schooler facing an unplanned pregnancy. Diablo Cody’s Oscar-winning script is a goldmine of sharp, hilarious dialogue, making this unconventional adoption story feel both warm and shockingly mature. Director Jason Reitman perfectly balances the emotional weight with an almost manic comic energy.
However, for me, the film falls short of masterpiece status because of its calculated quirkiness. That signature “Diablo Cody-speak,” while clever, sometimes sounds more like a script than real teenage conversation. It makes certain emotional beats feel a little too slick or manufactured in the final act.
It’s a must-see movie – funny, memorable, and full of heart – but that intentional, stylized dialogue keeps it from achieving true, messy perfection.
