Swades

Noble Intent, Sleepy Execution

IMDb rating: 7/10

Swades poster

Rewatching Swades with my daughter after 20 years was special… this 7/10 gem still tugs at the heart, but its slowness hit harder in 2025.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Mohan is soul-stirring, his NRI-to-patriot arc inspiring my teen, though his brooding drags at times. Gayatri Joshi’s Gita glows with quiet fire, but the script sidelines her. Kishori Ballal’s Kaveri Amma warms the soul, and Rajesh Vivek’s postman adds rustic charm.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s intent – rural India’s grit, Mohan’s sacrifice – shines, and A. R. Rahman’s “Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera” soars. Mahesh Aney’s visuals capture village beauty, but the 189-minute pace crawls, with direction feeling flat in parts. We loved the story’s depth and patriotism, yet the sluggish tempo tested us. It’s not perfect, but its message of giving back sparked great chats with my NRI daughter.

A thoughtful classic worth sharing, despite the drag.
