Bigger, Bolder, and Better Sequel That Outgrows Its Legend
IMDb rating: 9/10
I loved Ne Zha 2 – it improves on the first film in every bold, noisy way.
This sequel keeps the mythic core but expands the stage: bigger set-pieces, stranger magic, and a moral center that earns its drama. The animation is stupendous… fights are kinetic and inventive, and it trusts viewers with complex choreography rather than CGI for its own sake.
The Mandarin cast sells every beat; the English dub (anchored by Michelle Yeoh) adds gravitas without flattening the emotional core. Writer-director Jiaozi balances raucous comedy and mythic weight better here, tightening motivations (especially Ne Zha and Ao Bing) and giving secondary players true arcs.
The film occasionally overreaches – a few subplot detours dilute momentum – but those are small against a story that is generous, funny, and surprising. Most of all, Ne Zha 2 feels alive: it’s about chosen family, stubborn identity, and the cost of power, delivered with youthful fury.
If you loved the first, this is the sequel you hoped for; if you didn’t, this one might convert you. I’m giving it an 8.5/10.
